Perched on a mountainside 400 meters above sea level, Chkheri Fortress dates back to the XV-XVII centuries and once stood as a key military outpost controlling the Chkerimela River Valley. Built from cobblestone and rocky material, the fortress features robust outer walls and an inner acropolis, strategically designed to defend against invaders. During the Russo-Ottoman War of 1768-1774, the fortress played a pivotal role when King Solomon I of Imereti and his allies defended it from Ottoman forces, marking a significant victory. Vakhani Fortress
